Popcorn is one of my absolute favourite snacks, and one I feel good about giving to my kids as it’s a whole grain and is a good source of fibre. It’s one of those foods, however, that I recommend making at home whenever possible in order to spare yourself the sodium and calorie bomb. We have a cheap air popper, but for those of you who don’t, this is a brilliant way to make popcorn at home that is a) cheap, 2) nutritious, and 3) so easy!

All you need: paper lunch bags and corn kernels


Add 1/3 cup of kernels to a brown paper lunch bag and fold the end over a few times. Place the bag on its side with the fold turned down and heat on high power for approx. 3 minutes.* That’s all! Season with whatever you like (eg. butter, olive oil, parmesan, chili powder).

*I find every microwave is so different, so instead of cooking the kernels for a specific amount of time, I would just listen and when you hear ~2 seconds in between pops, turn it off.
